If a public charter school receives more applications than it has open seats available, the school conducts a lottery.

All students are given the same chance in the lottery — there are no tests or fees, and students are not given an advantage or disadvantage because of their academic standing or other needs. Charter schools do not select students based on grades or extracurricular activity participation. Charters accept students who need extra help in school, have IEPs and are English language learners. Names are drawn at random through a computer program.

After the lottery has been drawn, students will either be given an enrollment offer or be added to school waitlists. Students may be accepted at more than one school.
